This week, HotCosts is offering a Alsatian-style dry Riesling. The Riesling is from 25 year old vines from Wiley Vineyards in Anderson Valley. HotCosts has obtained a very small allocation for this featured wine and is offering it for only $14 a bottle and 1¢ shipping on orders of any size.

About this wine
Dry Riesling has become one of the more sought-after white varietals in the marketplace. It’s no wonder why, given the varietal provides lots of fresh fruit flavors and an acid back-bone that allows for great aging potential. Yes these wines can easliy develop bottle complexity for 15 – 20 years!

At 4 years of age, this Roessler Riesling is bone dry, showing crisp, vibrant Anderson Valley acidity, and is showing mineral (slate), peach, apple and hazelnut flavors. This wine can continue to develop in the bottle for another decade.

About the Vineyard
Wiley planted its first vines in 1972. Soil is former upland pasture, dense sandy loam and fractured sandstone from the Franciscan Formation. Anderson Valley climate is strongly influenced by its closeness to the ocean and the cooling marine flow from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Wiley Vineyard is exactly ten miles from the beach, and the site is closest to the ocean of any valley floor vineyard. The growing season for the fruit is one of the longest in Anderson Valley. On a typical warm day during verraison the afternoon temperature can rise one degree Fahrenheit each two miles between the vineyard site near Navarro and the capital of the valley, Boonville, some fifteen miles to the south. Vines are cane-pruned with 10 X 6′ spacing. Irrigation program emphasizes a “deficit” schedule with all water applied in August and September.

Food and wine
The 04 Dry Riesling can be paired with Thanksgiving turkey. Lie this bottle down till next Thanksgiving and you’ll be glad you did.

Rhone Varietal with 1 cent Shipping

This week, HotCosts is offering a rare, hand-crafted artisan wine produced by Bryan Kane of Vie Winery. This wine has consistenly won awards in past vintages and has been recognized as one of the Top Roussanne wines in all of California – and this year’s wine may be the best yet!  Only 100 Cases Produced. $29  HotCosts has obtained a very small allocation for this featured wine.

Roussanne is one of our favorite alternatives to Chardonnay as it is one of the only varietals that can stand up to it in terms of richness and mouth-feel. Although a completely different flavor profile than the Chardonnay grape, Roussanne provides the full-bodied backbone found commonly in Southern Rhone blends. On its own, Roussanne can be quite special and expressive, showing its honeysuckle characteristics brightly. The Round River Ranch, located in Bachelor Valley in upper Lake County, provides the perfect environment for this Southern Rhone varietal. It’s warm days allow this late ripening varietal to fully develop its flavors while it’s high elevation and cool night provide structure and acidity to the wine.

The Roussanne is from an old vine (planted in the early twentieth century) vineyard managed by Round River Farms. Located in Bachelor Valley in upper Lake County, this vineyard consists of Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Walnuts planted in the early twentieth century. The 4.5 acres of Roussanne, from which we are purchasing, was originally planted as Viognier, but after one season, it was apparent that it was not Viognier. This fact was later confirmed by UC Davis. The vineyard is planted 3.5′ vine spacing with alternating bi-lateral shoots and open canopy trellis. This unique and expensive configuration allows maximum control of the canopy for maximum ripeness while controlling excess exposure to the sun.

The 07 Roussanne can be paired with seafood – lobster, sole, shellfish, however we recommend oysters on the half shell.

HotCosts returns with 1¢ Shipping on all wines

We have decided to change the shipping policy on our two websites devoted to wine.   HotCosts will continue to offer agressive pricing per bottle and shipping for free (1¢), while Indie Winemaker’s will focus on bottle prices close to wholesale and charge for shipping.  The therory being that shipping fees matters most to those who live in the East Coast and Central time zone.  With shipping fees being lower for West Coast buyers, a lower price will be more important.

As always, both sites will continue to focus on small-lot artesian wines not typically found outside the winery.
